First look: Gabriel Dawe’s stunning new thread art in Italy.

Gabriel Dawe created Plexis no. 19, a stunning thread installation thats beautifully spread across two balconies in the atrium of a historic villa. The early 19th century neoclassic house, called Villa Olmo, was acquired in 1924 by the municipality of Como and is now open to the public only during cultural events and art exhibitions like this.

Plexus no. 19 consists of two thread structures streamed across an upper and lower balcony that is meant to be experienced from different angles or at different times of the day. As Dawe tells us, “When the sun comes in during the morning, it is fantastic. Having those window-shaped light beams add a dimension to the installation. I always like when I get direct sunshine on them because it emphasizes the layering of the thread in very interesting ways.”

With two assistants, he constructed this installation in about a week. His greatest challenge was working to the confines of the space. “Because of the historic nature of the building, I wasn’t able to touch ceiling, walls or floors to screw in my structures,” he says. “So I resorted to fixing them to the railings, which in great measure restricted what I was able to do. In the end, it worked out pretty well; it really exceeded my expectations how well the installation inhabits the space.”

Wellies have become as much a part of festival culture as the music, beer and straw hats. And, just like festival tents, they tend to get left behind in the muddy field at the end of the weekend, forgotten, sodden and anonymous.

So one guy decided to collect them up and do something good with them. Steffan Lemke-Elms set up Festival Reboot, a company that collects, cleans and reuses these unwanted wellington boots….

Once cleaned, the tops get chopped off leaving a clog like shoe at the bottom and a strip of welly material…. The rubbery material gets upcycled in either a beer holder, a notebook or a bracelet.. Steffan sells these in order to raise money to send the bottom part (the cleaned, paired Welly Clogs) out to the slums in Nairobi and Nakuru in Kenya.

1) The Beach Boys’ current lineup has a combined age of 345. Bear in mind that the USA itself is only 236.

2) The singing doesn’t start until after a minute so if you’re Jools-averse then skip forward.

3) Mike Love has the soulless death gaze of a sadist; avoiding it will prevent serious psychological discomfort.

One night in Paris, as I was sitting half-drunk in a taxi being driven along the banks of the Seine, I was hit with a very strong, very strange feeling. Suddenly I felt like all the buildings that I loved were miniature, like tiny toy models, and I could gather them all up and take them with me wherever I went. The Louvre and its pyramid, the Opéra, the Sacré Coeur, Notre Dame… all sitting in the palm of my hand. I owned the city of Paris and held its charms like trinkets in my tightly clenched fist, never to let go.

Now, walking through London, I try to quantify how I feel about this new city. I haven’t formed any kind of relationship with its streets and there are no traces of my life hidden in the brickwork. I still need a map to get around and I don’t know how to behave yet. London is so huge and so foreign, with so much to learn, I feel so small. This time I am miniature, sitting in London’s palm, ready to go wherever it takes me. I am at this city’s mercy, ready to learn what it has to teach me and to experience what it has to show me. It’s intimidating and unknown, but maybe with time I will grow; London and I will be on equal terms. Maybe, like the leaf-sweeper, the objects around me will cease to dwarf me and one day I’ll be able to pick one up and say ‘this is mine now’.
